Maputo, Mozambique – The movie “Debt Palaver,” a joint production by ANEEJ and AFRODAD, offers a powerful portrayal of the devastating effects of debt on Mozambique. This was the sentiment expressed by Leo Atakpu, Deputy Executive Director of ANEEJ, during a panel discussion at the African Conference on Debt and Development (AfCoDDIV).

The conference, held in Maputo, brought together African partners to discuss the continent’s debt crisis and explore alternative approaches. Atakpu, along with other panelists from various African countries, shared their experiences and insights on national debt meetings and the need for a united Africa that prioritizes equity and gender equality.

ANEEJ’s involvement in the film “Debt Palaver” highlights its commitment to raising awareness about the challenges posed by debt. The organization has also actively engaged with key stakeholders in Nigeria, advocating for the use of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to address debt issues and promoting transparency in financial dealings.

The AfCoDDIV conference concluded with a strong call for a more inclusive and equitable Africa. Participants emphasized the importance of investing in education, particularly for girls, and abolishing harmful laws that discriminate against women and girls.

As the African continent continues to grapple with the complexities of debt, the insights and recommendations from this conference offer valuable guidance for policymakers and civil society organizations working to address these challenges.
