Abuja, Nigeria (September 10, 2024) – The Nigerian government has vehemently denied allegations of human rights abuses leveled against it by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the United Kingdom.

In a statement released today, Special Adviser to the President for Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified that the recent actions taken against NLC President Joe Ajaero were in accordance with Nigerian law. Ajaero was stopped from traveling abroad after ignoring an invitation from law enforcement agencies conducting an ongoing investigation.

Onanuga emphasized that Nigeria is a country governed by law and that no one, including trade union leaders, is above the law. He cited examples from other countries, such as the United States, where prominent figures have faced legal scrutiny and investigations.

The government rejected the TUC’s claims as unfounded and based on a misunderstanding of the situation. Onanuga highlighted the pro-democracy stance of the current administration and its commitment to protecting civil liberties.

He also addressed the relationship between the Nigerian government and the labor movement, stating that while disagreements may arise, the government remains open to dialogue and engagement.

Onanuga clarified that the invitation extended to Ajaero was not related to his role as NLC President but rather to his status as a Nigerian citizen. He urged Ajaero to cooperate with the investigation and avoid creating unnecessary public sentiment against the security agencies.

The government reiterated its commitment to promoting economic growth and prosperity for Nigerian citizens. It emphasized that its policies are aimed at expanding the national economy and creating opportunities for all.
