The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced a reduction in nomination fees for local government elections, following a court directive.
The new fees are now set at 9 million Naira for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship candidates, while councillorship candidates will pay 4 million Naira, down from the initial 10 million and 5 million Naira, respectively.
During a press briefing at KANSIEC’s headquarters in Kano, the commission’s chairman, Professor Sani Lawal Malumfashi, emphasized their commitment to adhering to the law.
“We are law-abiding. The fees have been adjusted to 9 million Naira for chairmanship candidates and 4 million Naira for councillors,” he said.
This reduction comes after a court ruling in favor of three political parties that challenged the initial fee structure. Despite higher charges in other states, some reaching 20 million Naira, Kano’s commission promptly complied with the court’s decision.
Professor Malumfashi acknowledged the participation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties in the upcoming elections, stressing the significance of a competitive electoral process.
“This is not a game. Winning here means improving the state. It’s a win-win for democracy,” he noted.
He further called on the media to actively support and engage in the electoral process, recognizing their role as crucial stakeholders in promoting democracy.
