The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), has vowed to ensure the strict enforcement of the Supreme Court’s”ruling on local government autonomy. Speaking at a National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) interactive forum in Abuja, Aliyu emphasized that local governments in Nigeria must be governed by democratically elected representatives, as outlined by the Constitution.

The Supreme Court had, on July 11, ruled in favor of financial autonomy for local government councils across the country. Aliyu, determined to uphold this judgment, warned those seeking to undermine the law to reconsider, citing his unwavering commitment to compliance.

“Local governments must be led by democratically elected officials who prioritize public welfare and responsibly manage funds. ICPC will ensure full compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision, no matter the obstacles,” Aliyu stated.

He stressed the need to protect the integrity of the judiciary and pledged that, under his leadership, any attempts to sidestep the law would be met with strict action. “As long as I am here, I will not allow anyone to dismantle this ruling. I am resolute and unafraid,” Aliyu concluded.
