Nigeria Seeks Increased US Aid for Flood Victims
September 27th, 2024

Nigeria has appealed for additional humanitarian assistance from the United States to help alleviate the suffering of millions affected by devastating floods that have ravaged parts of the country.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, made the urgent plea during a high-level meeting with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
Shettima highlighted the dire consequences of climate change, emphasizing the need for immediate humanitarian aid to support the victims of recent floods, particularly in the northeastern state of Borno.
“The situation on the ground is dire,” Shettima said. “We are grappling with the devastating impacts of climate change, and the recent floods have exacerbated an already challenging humanitarian crisis.”
In response, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep condolences for the loss of life and livelihoods caused by the floods. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to providing increased support to Nigeria and other countries affected by climate change.
“The United Nations stands in solidarity with the people of Nigeria during this difficult time,” Guterres said. “We will continue to work closely with the Nigerian government and our partners to provide the necessary assistance to help those in need.”
