Bayelsa State, Nigeria – October 12, 2024 – The Nigerian government has commended the efforts of its troops in combating crude oil theft and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region. Defense Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar praised the troops for their significant achievements in curbing these criminal activities, which have led to a substantial increase in crude oil production.

During a visit to the headquarters of the Joint Task Force South South Operation Delta Safe in Bayelsa State, the minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made. He noted that crude oil production has risen from 1.5 million barrels per day to 1.7 million barrels per day, and he expects this figure to reach 2 million barrels per day by December 2024 and 2.5 million barrels per day by mid-2025.

Minister Abubakar emphasized the importance of protecting critical national infrastructure, including pipelines, to ensure the smooth flow of crude oil. He urged the troops to remain vigilant and continue their efforts to combat economic sabotage and illegal activities.

Rear Admiral JU Okeke, the commandant of the Joint Task Force, reported a significant decline in crude oil theft and illegal refining activities in the second and third quarters of 2024. This reduction has contributed directly to the increase in crude oil production.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also expressed his appreciation for the troops’ dedication and courage in facing the challenges of their mission. He commended their efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
