Jigawa State Governor Orders Investigation into Premature Minimum Wage Announcement

By Abdulhamid Sani
Dutse, Jigawa State (October 12, 2024) – Governor Malam Umar A. Namadi of Jigawa State has ordered an investigation into a circulating statement alleging that he has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000. The governor deemed the statement as “embarrassing and premature” as the committee tasked with advising on the appropriate wage is yet to complete its assignment.
The committee, headed by the Head of the State Civil Service, was established by the government to assess the current economic situation and determine a suitable minimum wage for the state. However, the premature announcement has prompted Governor Namadi to take action.
A committee chaired by the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Bello Abdulkadir Fanini, has been formed to investigate the source of the statement, its actual content, and the motive behind its dissemination. Other members of the committee include the Hon. Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, the Hon. Commissioner of Health, the Permanent Secretary Establishment and Service Matters, and the Permanent Secretary REPA. The committee is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.
In addition to the investigation, Governor Namadi has suspended Alhaji Bashir Ado Kazaure, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Salary and Pension, pending the outcome of the committee’s findings. This suspension is a precautionary measure to ensure the integrity of the investigation process.
The investigation and suspension highlight Governor Namadi’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the government’s decision-making process.
