Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has moved a step closer to conducting local government elections, officially swearing in Hon. Bala Aliyu Gusau as the new Chairman of the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC). The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday during a Zamfara State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Gusau.

In a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, it was announced that the terms of the 14 local government Sole Administrators would expire on October 23, 2024. Hon. Bala Aliyu Gusau, now in charge of ZASIEC, is tasked with overseeing the elections in accordance with the newly amended Zamfara State Electoral Law.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Justice Mukhtar Yusha’u, standing in for the Chief Judge, Justice Kulu Aliyu. During the event, Governor Lawal emphasized the importance of the recent electoral reforms, which were enacted a few weeks ago, stating they would lay the foundation for free and fair local government elections. He also announced that ZASIEC would soon release the official election timetable.

“We must adhere to the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government elections,” Governor Lawal remarked. “The amendments to the electoral law will help ZASIEC set clear guidelines, and I urge all stakeholders to support this process.

”During the meeting, the governor also reflected on his recent attendance at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), highlighting that the global event provided valuable insights that could drive development initiatives in Zamfara State.

Governor Lawal also issued a directive to expedite the launch of the Zamfara State Investment Promotion Agency (ZIPA) Board, in collaboration with the Secretary to the State Government and the Deputy Governor. This move is part of the administration’s broader goal to attract increased investment into the state.

In a major social welfare announcement, the governor revealed that Zamfara is set to begin the cash transfer component of the National Covid-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-Cares) program. The initiative, which will disburse N4.9 billion, is designed to benefit 5,000 poor and vulnerable households, 6,000 unemployed youths and women, and 8,000 economically active individuals through various empowerment programs.

Governor Lawal assured that the selection process would be transparent and fair, ensuring equitable distribution of resources across all communities in the state.
