Abuja, Nigeria – October 22, 2024 – Hon. Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has regained his freedom after serving a five-year prison sentence for corruption.
Lawan was convicted in 2012 of demanding and accepting a $500,000 bribe from billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. The bribe was allegedly offered in exchange for leniency during an investigation into fuel subsidy fraud.
Lawan’s conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court in January 2024, bringing an end to his legal battle.
