Jigawa State Withdraws from Lawsuit Against EFCC, ICPC

Jigawa State Backtracks on Legal Challenge Against Anti-Corruption Agencies
In a recent development, Jigawa State has decided to withdraw from a lawsuit aimed at challenging the legality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Bello Fanini, confirmed this decision while addressing the media on the ministry’s achievements in the third quarter of the year. Â
Fanini explained that the state’s withdrawal from the case, titled “AG Kogi and AG of the federation SC/CV/178/2023,” is part of a strategic decision to focus on other pressing legal matters. A formal notice of withdrawal has been submitted to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
No Detainees from August Protest
In a separate development, the Attorney General revealed that all 403 individuals arrested in connection with the August protests and subsequent property damage in Jigawa State have been released. The Department of Public Prosecution successfully prosecuted these cases, ensuring that no one remains in detention.
Ministry’s Legal Victories
The ministry’s legal team has also secured significant victories in other areas:
Successful Appeals: The department successfully filed and prosecuted 6 appeal cases at the Court of Appeals and 4 at the Supreme Court.Ongoing High Court Cases: Dozens of cases are nearing completion in the state’s 12 high courts.
Support for State Electoral Commission: The Department of Civil Litigation provided crucial legal support to the State Independent Electoral Commission during the recent local government elections held on October 5th.Citizen Complaints:
The Citizens’ Rights Department has received and addressed 63 complaints, with most resolved through mediation. Remaining cases have been referred to appropriate authorities for further action.
By withdrawing from the lawsuit against the anti-corruption agencies and effectively handling legal matters related to the August protests and other issues, the Jigawa State government demonstrates its commitment to justice, transparency, and the rule of law.
