A Tribute to Dr. Adewale Balogun, a Steadfast Comrade By Comrade Taiwo Otitolaye

A Farewell Journey Home
6th November, 2024
Dr. Adewale Balogun, a stalwart figure in Nigeria’s democratic struggle and a trusted confidant of the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, has passed away. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of many who knew him, particularly those who fought alongside him for a just and equitable society.
Balogun was more than just a personal assistant to Dr. Beko. He was a pillar of support for countless activists who sought refuge and guidance at the Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG). His unwavering commitment to the cause of human rights and social justice was evident in his actions, particularly during challenging times.
One such instance was when he accompanied Dr. Beko to Panti Police Station in Lagos to visit me after my arrest in 2000. I had been apprehended while addressing a World Press Conference at the International Press Center, where I was highlighting pressing issues such as extrajudicial killings and government threats.
Despite the hostile environment and the attempts to intimidate me, Balogun’s presence offered solace and reassurance. His unwavering support, coupled with Dr. Beko’s relentless advocacy, played a crucial role in ensuring my release.
Balogun’s dedication to the struggle for democracy and human rights extended beyond his role as a personal assistant. He was a constant source of encouragement and inspiration to those who sought to make a difference. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of activists.
As we mourn the loss of this remarkable individual, let us honor his memory by carrying forward the torch of his ideals. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
