Gusau, Zamfara State – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Zamfara State has issued an ultimatum to the state government to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage of N70,000 by the end of November, failing which it will embark on an indefinite strike from December 1st.
The decision was reached at a State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held in Gusau on November 18th, 2024. The NLC condemned the state government’s refusal to comply with the national minimum wage law, describing it as a betrayal of workers’ rights.
The labor union emphasized that all its affiliate unions in the state have endorsed the ultimatum and are ready to join the strike action if necessary.
The NLC’s Zamfara State Chairman, Comrade Sani Halliru, stressed the urgency of the matter, stating that workers in the state are facing immense hardship due to the non-implementation of the minimum wage. He warned that the union will not hesitate to take decisive action to protect the rights and welfare of its members.
The looming strike action has the potential to disrupt essential services in the state, including healthcare, education, and transportation. The NLC’s move underscores the growing frustration of workers across Nigeria who are grappling with rising inflation and economic uncertainty.
