“INEC and State Electoral Bodies Cannot Be Trusted for LG Elections” – OCCEN
The Organization for Community Civic Engagement (OCCEN) has called for the creation of an independent commission to conduct local government elections in Nigeria. This was disclosed by its Executive Director, Abdulrazak Alkali, during OCCEN’s quarterly media chat, which focused on strengthening democracy in northwest Nigeria.
Alkali expressed concerns over proposals to grant the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) powers to oversee local government polls, emphasizing the need for a separate, autonomous body to ensure transparency and fairness.
“A New Commission for a New Era of Accountability”“We have seen how both INEC and state electoral bodies conduct elections in Nigeria, and neither can be trusted to handle local government elections fairly,” Alkali stated. “It is crucial to establish a new commission comprising stakeholders, including civil society organizations and other independent entities, to manage these elections under local government autonomy.”
✓OCCEN’s Democratic Advocacy in the Northwest
Highlighting OCCEN’s commitment to democratic processes, Alkali detailed the organization’s activities across Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna states. He cited the group’s dismay over the conduct of local government elections in Kaduna, which prompted them to forgo monitoring similar exercises in Kano.
OCCEN is also leading initiatives to build peace and foster development through town hall meetings on peace, security, and the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
✓On Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills
When questioned about OCCEN’s stance on President Bola Tinubu’s contentious tax reform bills, Alkali revealed that the organization is engaging lawmakers to address public concerns. “These fears must be addressed. While the North appears comfortable with the bills, a thorough review is needed to protect all interests and ensure inclusivity,” he said.
✓Commitment to Good Governance
Alkali reaffirmed OCCEN’s dedication to promoting democracy and development, pledging continued collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen institutions and ensure good governance.
OCCEN’s advocacy for an independent electoral body aligns with its broader mission of fostering transparency and inclusivity in Nigeria’s democratic processes.
