Borno Flood Relief Committee Disburses N18 Billion to Over 100,000 Households

Maiduguri, Nigeria – The Borno State Government has disbursed over N18 billion in relief aid to more than 101,330 households affected by recent floods. This was revealed by the Chairman of the Flood Relief Disbursement Committee, Engr. Baba Bukar Gujibawu, during the presentation of the committee’s final report to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

The report detailed the distribution of cash, food, and non-food items to displaced families. The committee leveraged significant contributions from international organizations like UNHCR, WFP, and FAO, amounting to N4.3 billion.
Over one million people were impacted by the floods, resulting in substantial damage to infrastructure, farmlands, and tragic loss of life. The committee managed a total of N28.2 billion in funds, including a substantial N10 billion from the Borno State Government, and received in-kind donations valued at billions of naira.

In addition to direct aid to households, the committee allocated funds to support affected businesses, religious institutions, schools, and youth who assisted in relief efforts.
Governor Zulum Accepts Report and Directs Immediate Action
Governor Zulum expressed his appreciation for the committee’s diligent work and assured the implementation of all recommendations. He directed the establishment of a permanent disaster response structure within the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
To improve disaster preparedness, Zulum instructed the Secretary to the State Government to develop a system for proper street naming and house numbering throughout the state capital. The Ministry of Works was also directed to prioritize the reconstruction of flood-damaged roads.
