The Nigerian Presidency has swiftly denied reports claiming that former President Muhammadu Buhari was coerced into testifying in an arbitration proceeding in Paris. The reports, which emerged on Saturday evening, alleged that Buhari had been summoned to testify in a $6 billion Mambilla power contract dispute.

A Statement from the Presidency

In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency described the reports as “fake news”. Onanuga emphasized that the arbitration proceeding is confidential and should not have been reported in the media.

Presidency Maintains Buhari’s Testimony was Voluntary

The Presidency categorically stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not force Buhari or any other Nigerian to testify in the proceeding. Onanuga noted that all individuals involved in Nigeria’s defense are participating willingly, driven by patriotism and conviction.

Background of the Mambilla Power Contract Dispute

The Mambilla power contract dispute revolves around a $6 billion project awarded to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company of Nigeria in 2003. The project has been plagued by delays and controversies, including allegations of bribery and corruption.
