Katsina, Nigeria – January 25, 2025
At the Katsina State APC Stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the upcoming local government elections, former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.), reflected on his post-presidency life with gratitude and humility. The meeting, held at the Presidential Wing of the Katsina State Government House on Saturday, drew attention as Buhari shared personal insights into his current lifestyle and achievements.
“Since leaving Aso Rock, many have remarked that I’m looking better and fresher,” Buhari said with a smile. “I thank Allah for everything. People who had never visited Daura before are now coming to see me.”
The former president also spoke about his modest property holdings, emphasizing his integrity and commitment to transparency during his time in public office.
“I built my house in Daura long before my time with the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF),” he noted. “Aside from that, I only own two other houses in Kaduna—one where I live and another that I rent out to support myself. No one can accuse me of stealing public funds to build my homes.”
General Buhari’s comments highlight his pride in maintaining a simple and honest lifestyle, even as a former leader of Nigeria.
Meanwhile, public political analyst and President of the Civil Society Coalition on Peace and Conflict Resolution, Amb. Comrade Musbahu Basirka, shared a nuanced view of Buhari’s legacy.
“The former president will be remembered as a trustworthy and straightforward individual, someone who is not corrupt,” Basirka stated. “However, his failure to take decisive action against those involved in high-level corruption during his tenure contributed significantly to Nigeria’s current challenges. His ‘I don’t care’ attitude towards checking his cabinet and political associates made his administration one of the most corrupt governments in history.”
Basirka, who also serves as President of the African Network for Anticorruption, concluded by noting that while Buhari himself may have maintained integrity, his inability to hold others accountable ultimately hindered his government’s progress and credibility.
The gathering in Katsina also served as a key preparation for the forthcoming elections, with party stakeholders strategizing to strengthen their political footing across local government councils.
