Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State – The Minister of Defense, Alhaji Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, has affirmed that security conditions in Northwest and North Central Nigeria have significantly improved due to intensified military operations against banditry and insurgency.
Speaking to journalists in Birnin Kudu, the minister highlighted key progress in Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, Katsina, and Kaduna States, where communities and businesses are gradually recovering from past security threats.
Military Gains Against Banditry and Terrorism
Alhaji Badaru emphasized the government’s determination to completely eradicate terrorism and banditry by the end of 2025. He noted that reports from opinion leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and residents confirm a significant decline in violent attacks across the affected regions.
“Banditry and terrorism have reduced, and this is evident from public testimonies. However, we will not relax until we achieve total peace,” he assured.
The defense minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing necessary logistical support for the armed forces to sustain and build on recent security successes.
Nigeria-Niger Relations: No Diplomatic Rift
Addressing concerns over diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and Niger Republic, Alhaji Badaru dismissed any speculation of hostility between the two neighboring nations.
“Nigeria and Niger are like brothers. We share deep historical and cultural ties, and we will never take any action that could harm our relationship,” he stressed.
He cautioned against efforts by external forces attempting to create division between the two countries, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability.
Public Support Key to Lasting Peace
The minister urged Nigerians to actively support security agencies by providing credible intelligence that could help track and dismantle terrorist networks.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage citizens to share accurate and actionable information about criminal elements and their collaborators,” he urged.
With sustained military pressure and strong public cooperation, the federal government remains optimistic that peace and economic stability will be fully restored in the affected regions.
Looking Ahead
As the Nigerian Armed Forces intensify operations, more communities in the Northwest and North Central regions are beginning to experience economic recovery, with displaced persons gradually returning to their homes.
The government reassures citizens that security remains a top priority, and all efforts will be made to ensure that banditry and insurgency become a thing of the past.
