Rivers State House of Assembly Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Governor Fubara

By Faisal A Harande
In a surprising turn of events, the Rivers State House of Assembly has given Governor Sim Fubara a 48-hour ultimatum to present the 2025 budget. This directive was made during a plenary session in Port Harcourt, with Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol moving the motion.
What’s interesting is that Governor Fubara had already signed the ₦1.1 trillion 2025 budget into law on January 2, 2025, after presenting it to lawmakers led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. However, the Assembly is now demanding that he present the budget to them, citing the need for proper legislative oversight.
Background of the Controversy
The Rivers State House of Assembly has been embroiled in controversy, with the Supreme Court recently ruling that Speaker Martin Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers remain members of the Assembly until their status is legally determined ¹ ². The court also ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria to withhold allocations to Rivers State until the government complies with its ruling.
The Assembly’s decision to issue an ultimatum to Governor Fubara is seen as a move to assert its authority and ensure that the executive arm of government is held accountable. The next 48 hours will be crucial in determining the outcome of this development.
