In a dramatic turn of events, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel into custody. The arrest is linked to allegations of mismanaging N700 billion during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
According to sources, Emmanuel’s arrest follows a petition filed by the Network Against Corruption and Traffaling (NACAT), accusing him of financial mismanagement. The petition claims that during his eight-year tenure, Akwa Ibom State received N3 trillion from the Federation Account, but Emmanuel allegedly left behind:
- A debt profile of N500 billion
- Unfinished projects worth N300 billion
- Unaccounted state funds of N700 billion ²
Emmanuel arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 12:30 p.m. today in response to an invitation but was subsequently detained. The EFCC has not issued an official statement on the arrest yet.
