In a significant move to combat financial and cybercrimes, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the French government have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in asset tracking, cybercrime investigation, and security training.

This development was announced during a courtesy visit by Lieutenant General Regis Colombet, Director of Security and Defence Cooperation at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Colombet highlighted France’s extensive collaboration in various security domains, including the establishment of specialized academic and training centers. He cited the Cyber School in Dakar, Senegal, and an Academy in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, as examples of France’s commitment to developing expertise in security and defense.

EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, welcomed the collaboration, noting the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and France in tackling crime. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating financial and cybercrimes, which have no borders.

The EFCC chairman also drew attention to a recent breakthrough in dismantling an international criminal syndicate operating across Europe and Asia, with plans to establish a foothold in Nigeria. He expressed gratitude for France’s capacity development initiatives and emphasized the importance of technological advancements in modern crime-fighting efforts.

Key Areas of Cooperation:

Asset Tracking: EFCC and France will work together to track and recover stolen assets.

-Cybercrime Investigation: The two countries will collaborate on investigating and prosecuting cybercrimes.

Security Training: France will provide training opportunities for EFCC personnel on cybersecurity and other security-related issues.

This collaboration is a significant step forward in the fight against financial and cybercrimes, and it is expected to yield positive results in the coming months.
