In a landmark development, the Federal Government has adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal university. This move is set to elevate the institution’s status and bolster its impact on education in Nigeria.

Established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED has consistently been a beacon of excellence in education, earning its reputation as Nigeria’s first specialized university of education. The university’s namesake, Dr. Tai Solarin, was a renowned activist and educator who founded the prestigious Mayflower School in Ikenne.

President Tinubu’s approval of the adoption on Friday underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening education in Nigeria. The President expressed his gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the institution, highlighting the significance of this development in honoring the legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin.

As a federal institution, TASUED will become the first federally owned tertiary school in Ogun East senatorial district. This transition is expected to require minimal federal investment, thanks to the university’s well-developed infrastructure and academic programs.

The Federal Government’s takeover of TASUED brings the total number of federal universities of education to three, with Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo being the other two.

This development marks a significant milestone in the history of TASUED and education in Nigeria. As the university embarks on this new chapter, it is poised to play an even more critical role in shaping the country’s education landscape.
