ECOWAS Defence Chiefs Meet in Abuja: A Push for Regional Security

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, officially declared open the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, Nigeria, today, March 11, 2025. The high-level meeting, scheduled to run until March 13, 2025, brings together top military officials from ECOWAS member countries.


The opening session was attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and other representatives of ECOWAS member countries. Badaru emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated military response to combat security challenges in West Africa, including terrorism, banditry, and organized crime.

The meeting aims to strengthen regional security cooperation and enhance collective efforts to tackle insecurity. The activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force was also announced, marking a significant step towards reinforcing security architecture in the region ¹.
