In a daring operation, security personnel accompanying Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum’s convoy successfully repelled an ambush by Boko Haram militants along the Buni Gari-Buni Yadi road on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The governor, who had flown by helicopter, was not present in the convoy during the attack.
According to counter-insurgency expert Makama Zagazola, an unspecified number of militants were neutralized during the ensuing clash, and seven kidnapped travelers were rescued. The convoy comprised troops from Operation Hadin Kai, an elite police unit, and senior government officials returning from Biu Local Government Area in Borno.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the terrorists attempted to seize travelers from a Volkswagen vehicle but were thwarted by the security personnel, who engaged them in a firefight. The troops recovered weapons and motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing insurgents.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Borno State, despite efforts by the government to combat terrorism. Governor Zulum has been a vocal advocate for improved security measures in the region.
