In a significant development, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has suspended the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, pending a final decision by the Supreme Court. This decision comes after the court upheld the Kano State Government’s repeal of the 2019 Emirate Council Law, which had created five new emirates and reinstated Sanusi II as Emir.

The court’s ruling effectively puts Sanusi’s reinstatement on hold until the Supreme Court makes a final ruling on the appeal. Additionally, the court set aside the June 20 order of the Federal High Court in Kano, which had nullified the Kano State Government’s actions under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024.

Background of the Case

The Kano State Government had appealed to the Supreme Court and sought an injunction from the Court of Appeal to prevent the enforcement of the judgment. The Court of Appeal granted the request, restraining the Kano State Government and other respondents from enforcing the January 10 judgment until the Supreme Court’s final decision ¹ ².

Implications of the Ruling

The Court of Appeal’s decision has significant implications for the Emirate of Kano and the state government. The ruling effectively maintains the status quo, pending the Supreme Court’s final decision. This means that Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir remains on hold, and the Kano State Government’s actions under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024 remain suspended.

What’s Next?

The case will now proceed to the Supreme Court, which will make a final ruling on the appeal. The Supreme Court’s decision will ultimately determine the fate of Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir of Kano and the validity of the Kano State Government’s actions under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024.
