The Rivers State House of Assembly has taken significant steps to enhance governance and democracy in the state. At its 136th Legislative Sitting on Friday, the Assembly passed three crucial bills, which will now be forwarded to the Governor for assent.

The Three Passed Bills:

  • Rivers State House of Assembly (Powers and Privileges) Bill, 2025: This bill seeks to grant the House powers, privileges, and immunity to perform its legislative duties effectively.
  • Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Bill, 2025: This bill aims to repeal the existing State Electoral Law of 2018 and establish a new one, providing for the establishment, composition, and functions of the Commission in line with the Electoral Act of 2022.
  • Rivers State Local Government Bill, 2025: This bill seeks to repeal the State’s Local Government Laws of 2018, 2023, and 2024, and re-enact a new Local Government Law that aligns with contemporary laws in the administration of Local Government Councils.

According to Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, the Assembly is simply domesticating the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act of 2017, which grants certain powers and privileges to the Legislature. Amaewhule emphasized that the RSIEC Bill is crucial for the state’s electoral process.

The passage of these bills demonstrates the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening governance and democracy in Rivers State.
