By Abdulhamid Sani
In a significant move to boost immunization coverage in Jigawa State, the Vaccine Network for Disease Control (VNDC) Jigawa State team, led by Coordinator Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, a renowned civil society expert, conducted a successful advocacy visit to the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency on Monday, March 24, 2025.

The team met with top management officials, including Executive Secretary Dr. Shehu Sambo and Director PHC Malam Hassan Kwalam, to present their project’s objectives, target areas, and milestones. The agency’s management pledged their support and cooperation to ensure the project’s success, with a focus on enhancing immunization coverage, particularly among zero-dose children.

The advocacy visit highlighted the importance of addressing the issue of zero-dose children in Jigawa State. According to research, factors such as maternal education, mass media exposure, and community education and awareness campaigns play a significant role in determining immunization coverage.
The VNDC Jigawa State team’s efforts align with the Partnership to Reach Zero-Dose Children (PREACH) project, which aims to enhance immunization coverage in Nigeria by mobilizing domestic resources and ensuring efficient allocation and timely vaccine finances.
The successful advocacy visit marks a significant step forward in the VNDC Jigawa State team’s collaboration with Jigawa State’s healthcare stakeholders. With the support of the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency and Emirate representatives, the team is poised to make a positive impact on immunization coverage in the state.
As the team moves forward, they will focus on addressing the challenges and opportunities identified during the advocacy visit, including reducing reliance on donor funding and increasing domestic resources for routine immunization.
