Governor Abba, Emir Sunusi, Kwankwaso and Barau Jibrin Attend Funeral of Late Galadiman Kano

KANO, Nigeria – A somber atmosphere enveloped Kano as the city mourned the passing of Alhaji Abbas Sunusi Bayero, the Galadiman Kano, who died at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness. The late royal, a respected member of the Kano Emirate Council, was laid to rest at Gandu Cemetery following funeral prayers held at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu.
The funeral prayers, led by Kano Chief Imam, Professor Sani Zahraddeen, drew a large crowd of mourners, including prominent political and traditional leaders. Among those who paid their respects were Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabiru Yusuf, Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, former Kano State Governor and Senator, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, and Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin.

Alhaji Abbas Sunusi Bayero’s long and distinguished career within the Kano Emirate began in 1959 when his father, Emir Sanusi I, appointed him Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and District Head of Ungogo. He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Dan Iyan Kano in 1962 under Emir Muhammadu Inuwa, and later Wambai of Kano during the reign of Emir Ado Bayero. His final title, Galadiman Kano, was bestowed upon him by his nephew, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, solidifying his status as a senior statesman.

Born in Bichi in 1933, Alhaji Abbas Sunusi Bayero received his early education at Kofar Kudu Elementary School and Kano Middle School (now Rumfa College). His legacy extends through his family, including his son, Abdullahi Abbas, the current chairman of the Kano chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Other notable figures who attended the funeral included Jibril Ismail Falgore, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Malam Salihu Sagir Takai, Aminu Babba Dan’agundi, and Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, alongside thousands of other mourners who came to pay their final respects.
The passing of Galadiman Kano marks the end of an era for the Kano Emirate, and his contributions to the region will be long remembered.
