Police Withdraws Invitation to Emir Sanusi, Sends Operatives to Kano
By Usman A Harande
The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its invitation to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II of Kano State, initially issued in connection with a violent incident during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025. Instead, the Force Intelligence Department (FID) will send operatives to Kano to obtain the Emir’s statement.
Background of the Incident
Prior to the Sallah celebration, police intelligence indicated that two disputed Emirs in Kano State, Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi, planned to hold separate Durbar Festivals, a traditional event involving horse riding. To prevent possible violence, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a team to engage with the Emirs and the Kano State Government, resulting in a mutual agreement to cancel the festivals.
The Violent Incident
Despite the agreement, Emir Sanusi mounted a horse in a procession after Eid Prayers, triggering a confrontation that led to the tragic death of one Usman Sagiru and several injuries. The police had warned against this scenario and intended to prevent it through emissaries sent to both Emirs.
Police Action
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to conducting its investigation with professionalism and will bring all culpable individuals to justice. Some arrests have been made, and the Force reiterates its actions are guided by justice, neutrality, and professionalism.
Reaction from Stakeholders
The Assembly for the Preservation of Traditional Institutions in Nigeria expressed concern over the police invitation, questioning its timing and motive, especially given the ongoing investigation by the Kano State Police Command.
