By Usman A Harande
In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has welcomed new investment initiatives from Qatar, with a focus on the agricultural sector. This move underscores Nigeria’s readiness to forge strategic partnerships and strengthen bilateral ties with the Qatari government.
During a meeting with Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and special envoy of the Amir of Qatar, President Tinubu expressed enthusiasm about exploring opportunities in agriculture, food security, and other critical sectors. A high-level Qatari business delegation is set to visit Nigeria in the coming weeks to discuss potential investments.
President Tinubu’s assurance to implement all bilateral agreements between Nigeria and Qatar follows his successful state visit to Qatar in 2024. He directed key ministers to work together to ensure timely execution of these agreements, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to building on the momentum generated during his visit.
“We are willing to go further in our bilateral relations,” President Tinubu stated, commending Qatar’s efforts in promoting global peace and stability. He also highlighted ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s tax system, aimed at making it easier for foreign investors to do business in the country.
Dr. Al-Khulaifi conveyed the Amir’s desire to strengthen strategic partnerships with Nigeria, particularly in peace-building, agriculture, and petrochemicals. He expressed pride in the current level of relations and looked forward to expanding both government-to-government and people-to-people ties.
The Qatari envoy’s visit marks a significant step in Nigeria-Qatar relations, with potential investments in agriculture and other sectors. As President Tinubu noted, “You can’t find a better partner than Nigeria.” With Qatar’s interest in Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa, this partnership holds promise for economic prosperity and development.
