Dutse, Jigawa State – Residents across Jigawa State are set to benefit from a significant push towards improved water supply and sanitation, as the state’s Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) announced the successful completion of key projects in the first quarter of 2025. This concerted effort aligns directly with Governor Malam Umar A Namadi FCA’s comprehensive 12-point development agenda, underscoring his administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the people of Jigawa.

The agency, under the leadership of Managing Director Engr. Abubakar Sidi Mnse, has been pivotal in translating the governor’s vision into tangible results. Governor Namadi, who assumed office with a strong mandate to uplift key sectors, has consistently emphasized water and sanitation as foundational pillars for public health and socio-economic progress in the largely agrarian state. His administration’s focus on rural development is particularly evident in these initiatives.

In a significant stride, RUWASA has overseen the construction of nine new simple solar-powered water systems. These modern facilities are strategically located in communities such as Garin Kwalandi and Abattoir in Maigatari, Gausu Bola in Gumel, Unguwar Sarki in Hadejia, Gyatimi in Miga, and Kan Tudu in Yankwashi. The adoption of solar technology points to a sustainable approach, reducing reliance on less environmentally friendly power sources and ensuring long-term operational viability.

Further bolstering water accessibility, the agency has also impressively rehabilitated 300 hand pump boreholes across various local government areas. This crucial intervention restores functionality to existing water points, providing immediate relief and access to clean water for numerous communities. Complementing this, 142 new Afridev hand pump boreholes have been constructed, further expanding the network of reliable water sources.
Recognizing the critical link between water and hygiene, the state government has also prioritized sanitation infrastructure. RUWASA is currently constructing 35 pour flush latrines in public schools and healthcare facilities. This initiative is expected to significantly improve hygiene standards, reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, and create a healthier learning and healthcare environment.
To ensure the smooth execution and monitoring of these widespread projects, RUWASA has procured a Toyota Hilux project vehicle, enhancing its operational capacity and ability to reach remote project sites efficiently.
The financial commitment behind these projects is substantial, with N602,000,000 allocated for water projects and N180,000,000 dedicated to latrine construction. This investment reflects the high priority the Namadi administration places on addressing fundamental human needs.
Engr. Abubakar Sidi Mnse, Managing Director of RUWASA, reiterated the agency’s unwavering dedication to fulfilling its mandate. “We are fully committed to delivering these projects to the highest standards and ensuring they positively impact the lives of our people. Governor Namadi’s unwavering support and clear vision for Jigawa State are the driving force behind our achievements,” he stated.
These first-quarter accomplishments by RUWASA mark a promising start to 2025 for Jigawa State, signaling a determined effort by the government to create a healthier, more prosperous, and sustainable future for all its citizens through improved access to clean water and dignified sanitation. The focus on these essential services is a cornerstone of Governor Namadi’s people-centric governance.
