Kano CSOs Rally Behind Suspension of Live Radio Politics Amid Rising Tensions
By Hassan Kano
In a significant show of support, 107 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Kano State have backed the recent decision by media executives to suspend live radio political broadcasting, citing widespread criticism over unethical practices that fueled political tensions.
The CSOs, in a press statement, commended the Media Executive Forum for taking a bold step to halt live political broadcasts that had deviated from responsible journalism and ethical standards. “When media platforms are used recklessly, they become tools of division rather than instruments of enlightenment,” the statement read.
The suspended live programmes were often marred by unverified claims, personal attacks, and provocative language, which exacerbated divisions and disrupted public peace in Kano’s delicate political climate. The CSOs emphasized that freedom of expression must be balanced with responsibility, truth, and respect for the rule of law.
The CSOs urged media houses in Kano and beyond to review their editorial policies, ensuring their platforms don’t spread misinformation, political manipulation, or hate speech. They also called on regulatory bodies like the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to prioritize capacity building for media practitioners and advocate for regulations that safeguard the media’s role in promoting democracy and peace.
This development highlights the need for responsible media practices in Nigeria’s fragile political landscape. As the country navigates complex power dynamics, the media’s role in shaping public discourse is crucial. The suspension of live radio politics in Kano serves as a timely reminder of the importance of ethics in journalism.
The NBC and NUJ are expected to take a closer look at media regulations and enforcement mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the media landscape continues to evolve, stakeholders must work together to promote responsible journalism practices that prioritize truth, accuracy, and respect for the law.
By promoting responsible media practices, Kano State can take a significant step towards fostering a more informed and peaceful public discourse.
