In the wake of the devastating flood disaster that ravaged Mokwa, Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has announced a comprehensive relief and resettlement package for the affected communities. Following an on-the-spot assessment and condolence visit to the victims, Governor Bago revealed a multifaceted plan to alleviate the suffering of those impacted.

The Niger State Government has allocated land for the Federal Government’s N2 billion resettlement program, pledged by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a sympathy visit led by Vice President Kashim Shettima. To provide immediate relief, the state government will disburse N1 billion to families currently residing in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, enabling them to secure temporary accommodations until the federal government’s resettlement housing scheme is implemented.

In addition to financial support, the state government will distribute 10 trucks each of essential food items, including rice, beans, maize, millet, and sorghum. Furthermore, the government has awarded a N7 billion contract for the construction of the Mokwa-Rabba road, including four bridges, to enhance connectivity between the two towns.

To prevent similar tragedies in the future, Governor Bago has directed the State Ministry of Environment and relevant agencies to conduct a thorough survey of waterways and topography in Niger State, with a view to relocating residents from coastal areas. The governor expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, traditional institutions, elders, religious leaders, and individuals worldwide for their empathy and support.

As Niger State embarks on this ambitious relief and resettlement effort, the lives of thousands of flood victims are poised for a positive transformation. With the state government’s commitment to providing temporary housing support and the Federal Government’s resettlement program on the horizon, the future looks brighter for those affected.
