The Jigawa State Justice Sector Reform Committee has engaged stakeholders in Hadejia and Ringim towns to review existing laws and align them with contemporary societal dynamics. The move aims to address systemic challenges in the state’s justice sector and improve efficiency, fairness, and public trust in the legal system.

Key Areas of Focus

Remand Proceedings: Reviewing procedures for remand cases to ensure timely justice delivery

Juvenile Cases: Focusing on the handling of juvenile cases to provide appropriate justice and support

Bail Applications: Streamlining bail application processes to reduce delays and ensure fairness

Jurisdiction: Clarifying jurisdictional boundaries to prevent conflicts and ensure effective justice delivery

Monetary Cases: Reviewing procedures for monetary cases to enhance efficiency and reduce backlog

Civil and Criminal Procedure: Updating procedures to reflect contemporary best practices

Witchcraft-Related Matters: Addressing challenges related to witchcraft cases to ensure justice and fairness

According to Abbas Rufa’i Wangara, Director of Publicity and Protocol at the State Judiciary, the committee’s formation is seen as a proactive step towards addressing long-standing challenges in the justice system. Stakeholders have expressed optimism that the platform will facilitate constructive dialogue, enabling the resolution of critical issues for a more efficient and equitable legal framework.

The Justice Sector Reform Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive and responsive judiciary and other justice institutions in the state. The committee urges all stakeholders to actively participate in the process to ensure the successful implementation of the reforms.

Jigawa State has been working to improve its justice sector, with the Ministry of Justice playing a crucial role in the process. The state has laws and regulations in place, including the Penal Code, Sharia Penal Code Law, and Administration of Criminal Justice Law, to ensure justice and fairness.
