NIGERIA, BRAZIL DEEPEN TIES: Defence Agreement Signed in Abuja

In a significant development, the Nigerian Government, led by Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, has signed a landmark Defence Agreement with the Government of Brazil. The agreement was signed on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, during the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM).

The ceremony was attended by Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who signed on behalf of his government. This strategic partnership aims to bolster cooperation between the two nations in key areas, including defence, agriculture, trade, industry, science, and technology.
According to Mati Ali, Media Aide to the Honourable Minister of Defence, “The agreement is a testament to the commitment of both governments to strengthen strategic business partnerships and explore new investment opportunities.” The three-day Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism served as a platform for both nations to discuss and solidify areas of mutual interest.

Enhanced cooperation in defence and security, Increased investment in renewable energy, Cultural exchange programs to promote people-to-people diplomacy, Collaboration in science and technology, Trade and industry partnerships to boost economic growth.
This development is expected to have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s economic and security landscape. By partnering with Brazil, Nigeria aims to leverage the South American nation’s expertise in areas such as agriculture and renewable energy to drive growth and development.
