Kano Govt Launches 2-Day Workshop to Tackle Diet-Related Diseases

The Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs has flagged off a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at empowering Local Government Information Officers with strategic communication skills to promote healthy eating habits and combat the rising threat of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across the state.
The workshop, themed “Promoting Healthy Dietary Practices and Reducing the Incidence of Diet-Related Non-Communicable Diseases in Kano State,” is a timely intervention to address the increasing prevalence of NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in both urban and rural communities.
Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, emphasized the importance of the workshop, stating, “The rising burden of these illnesses, largely driven by poor nutrition and unhealthy lifestyles, is a serious public health concern.” He added that the workshop underscores the present administration’s commitment to proactive, preventive, and people-focused healthcare delivery under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The workshop is designed to equip Local Government Information Officers with essential nutrition knowledge and communication skills to enhance public enlightenment and promote healthy dietary practices at the grassroots level. Comrade Waiya commended the Nutrition Society of Nigeria for curating a well-structured program that blends nutrition knowledge with modules designed to enhance the communication and public enlightenment capacities of the officers.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the continuous training and retraining of its officers, stating, “Human capital development is central to effective governance and meaningful community impact.” He urged participants to take full advantage of the sessions and apply the knowledge gained to improve health awareness and dietary practices in all 44 local government areas of the state.

Seasoned scholars and public health professionals will facilitate the sessions, providing participants with valuable insights and practical knowledge to tackle diet-related diseases. The workshop will explore ways to translate knowledge gained into actionable public enlightenment initiatives, empowering Local Government Information Officers to become frontline advocates of behavioral change at the grassroots level.
