In a bid to enhance service delivery and promote public awareness on critical health issues, the Kano State Government has charged Local Government Information Officers to demonstrate professionalism and dedication in their duties. This call was made by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during the closing ceremony of a two-day capacity-building workshop organized for the officers.

Held on July 1, 2025, the workshop focused on developing strategies for enlightening the public about healthy eating and preventing diet-related non-communicable diseases. According to Comrade Waiya, officers who show commitment and competence in their duties will naturally earn the respect and trust of their superiors and be engaged in critical assignments.

The Commissioner assured the participants of the government’s continued commitment to enhancing their capacity through regular training, emphasizing that their role in disseminating accurate information and educating the public on issues that directly impact their well-being is vital to societal development.

The workshop provided a platform for Local Government Information Officers to acquire effective communication strategies for promoting healthy living and proper nutrition. Comrade Waiya commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support to the Ministry, particularly in empowering its personnel and sustaining public enlightenment initiatives.

The Commissioner also acknowledged the contributions of the ministry’s staff, experts, and resource persons who presented papers during the workshop, stating that the knowledge shared will go a long way in equipping officers with the necessary skills. Certificates of participation were presented to all attendees.

The training comes at a time when the state government is making concerted efforts to promote healthy living and prevent diet-related non-communicable diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death globally, accounting for 74% of all deaths. In Nigeria, NCDs are a growing health concern, with diet-related factors contributing significantly to the burden.

By empowering Local Government Information Officers, the Kano State Government is taking a proactive step towards promoting healthy living and preventing diet-related NCDs. As the officers return to their respective domains, they are expected to cascade the knowledge acquired to the grassroots level, promoting a healthier and more informed population.

Speaking on behalf of the Local Government Information Officers, Jamilu Mustapha expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for his consistent support for their welfare and professional development. This gesture underscores the government’s commitment to the growth and development of its personnel.

The Kano State Government’s initiative to empower Local Government Information Officers is a welcome development that promises to enhance public enlightenment and promote healthy living. As the government continues to prioritize the welfare and development of its personnel, citizens can expect more effective service delivery and targeted interventions to address pressing health issues.
