In a shocking turn of events, students of Federal Government College Kiyawa have been accused of vandalizing and destroying school property worth N129 million. The destruction, which includes newly constructed hostels, a renovated hostel, and a kitchen, was reportedly in response to a dispute with the school management over food and cooking utensils.

According to sources, the damaged facilities were generously provided by philanthropist Ambassador Dr. Halima Suleiman Zakari through her foundation, NANA Halima Initiative. What’s more, Ambassador Dr. Halima, a proud alumna of Federal Government College Kiyawa, had invested in the school to improve learning conditions for students.

Abdurrashid Ali Zareku, Jigawa State Coordinator of Youth and Civil Society Advocacy for Development (YOCSAD), strongly condemned the actions, stating, “Such acts are not only unacceptable but also detrimental to the educational environment and the future prospects of the students themselves.” Comrade Aminu Aminu, National President of YOCSAD, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for immediate action against those responsible.

YOCSAD has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and immediate action against those found responsible. “We urge the school administration and Ambassador Dr. Halima Suleiman Zakari to work together to restore the damaged facilities,” Zareku said. The organization also recommends dialogue between the school administration and students to address grievances and resolve conflicts peacefully.

This incident is a significant setback for education in Jigawa State, which has been working to improve its educational infrastructure. The destruction of these facilities not only undermines the efforts of philanthropists like Ambassador Dr. Halima but also affects the learning environment for students.

Ambassador Dr. Halima Suleiman Zakari’s investment in Federal Government College Kiyawa is part of her efforts to give back to her alma mater. As a proud product of the school, she has consistently supported initiatives that promote education and girl-child empowerment. This incident, however, may deter potential philanthropists from investing in the school.

YOCSAD is appealing to stakeholders, including parents, guardians, and the broader community, to condemn this act of vandalism and support efforts to promote a culture of respect for educational institutions and their facilities. Students are urged to focus on their education and seek peaceful ways to resolve conflicts.

As the investigation unfolds, one thing is clear: the future of education in Jigawa State hangs in the balance. Will the authorities take swift action, or will this incident set a precedent for destructive behavior in schools? Only time will tell.
