In a bid to boost infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic growth, the Kano State Executive Council, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a whopping N69,057,747,235.36 development package. This was disclosed by the Honorable Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a press briefing on the outcome of the 29th meeting of the State Executive Council.

Breakdown of Approved Projects

The approved projects span various sectors, including health, education, energy, water resources, environment, transportation, youth and sports, higher education, works, and infrastructure. Some notable projects include:

  • N180 million for counterpart funding of Free Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health Programme
  • N240 million for procurement of a brand-new Toyota Coaster bus for the School of Health Technology, Bebeji
  • N107 million for provision and deployment of essential requirements for the Kano Ultra-Modern Specialist Hospital (KUSH)
  • N3.7 billion for procurement of 500 units of modern electric tricycles under the Abba Gida Gida Mass Transport Empowerment and Employment Programme
  • N7.8 billion for rehabilitation/asphalt overlay of RMK Flyover – IBB Road – Kofar Mazugal Junction – Katsina Road
  • N24.7 billion for expansion of Katsina Road (Baban Gwari Roundabout – Mil Tara), including five RC pedestrian bridges

Policy Directives

The State Executive Council also approved the immediate disbursement of N3 billion Federal Government Intervention Funds to victims of flood disasters across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state. Additionally, the council directed the settlement of offshore liability in respect of the Tiga 10MW and Challawa 2x3MW Hydro Power Plants project amounting to $1 million (equivalent to N1.55 billion).

Water Scarcity

The Governor expressed disappointment with the persistent water scarcity in the state and directed all management staff of the Ministry of Water Resources and the State Water Board to take necessary measures to end the crisis. He issued a clear ultimatum to MDAs in the water sector to provide portable drinking water across the state as quickly as possible.

Commitment to Development

Comrade Waiya emphasized the state government’s commitment to transforming Kano into a model of inclusive development, infrastructural renewal, and social empowerment. He stated, “The projects and interventions approved are clear reflections of the administration’s resolve to deliver impactful governance and improve the quality of life for all residents.”

Additional Initiatives

The Kano State Government has also re-engaged Ahmed Tanko & Co., Chartered Accountants, to conduct a further audit on the supply of alum in the Ministry of Water Resources from May 2023 to date. This move is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of state resources.
