INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIR RAJI’UN — The nation is in mourning as the family of Nigeria’s former President, General Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), confirms his passing earlier today, Saturday, July 13, 2025, in a private medical clinic in London, United Kingdom, after a brief illness. He was 81 years old.

The news was made public in an official statement signed by Garba Shehu, longtime spokesperson and senior aide to the late former president.

“May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings,” the statement read.

A Towering Figure in Nigerian History

Born December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with distinction both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a democratically elected civilian president (2015–2023). His political journey spanned over four decades, marked by his commitment to anti-corruption, national security, and self-discipline, which earned him both praise and criticism.

A retired Major General in the Nigerian Army, Buhari first came to power through a military coup in 1983. After being ousted in 1985, he staged an extraordinary political comeback, contesting for the presidency multiple times before finally winning in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During his civilian presidency, Buhari led Africa’s most populous nation through periods of economic recession, a global COVID-19 pandemic, and persistent security challenges, including insurgency in the Northeast. His administration also embarked on several infrastructure and anti-corruption reforms.

He stepped down from office in May 2023 after completing his constitutionally mandated two terms.

National and Global Reactions Expected

Tributes have begun pouring in from across Nigeria and the international community, acknowledging Buhari’s long-standing role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape. The Federal Government is expected to announce official mourning arrangements in the coming hours, including flags flown at half-mast and national prayers.

Legacy of Discipline, Controversy, and Reform

Whether revered or criticized, Buhari leaves behind a complex legacy—one marked by an austere personal lifestyle, unyielding policies, and a deep influence on Nigeria’s democratic evolution. He will be remembered as one of the most consequential leaders in Nigeria’s post-independence history.

As the nation reflects on his life and service, millions of Nigerians Muslims and Christians alike join in prayer:

“May Allah forgive him, reward his service, and grant him eternal peace in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Public Eye News Nigeria will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on funeral arrangements and national reactions.
