The Kano State Government has restated its strong commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights across the state, reaffirming its resolve to continue partnering with relevant institutions to safeguard the dignity of every citizen.

This assurance was given on Wednesday, October 30, 2025, when the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu, OFR, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the office of the Kano State Commissioner, who is also a long-standing advocate of human rights and civil society engagement.

Dr. Ojukwu, who was accompanied by the Kano State Coordinator of the NHRC, Mallam Shehu Abdullahi, commended the Kano State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, for providing an enabling environment that strengthens human rights protection and promotion in the state.

The NHRC boss further applauded the Commissioner for his enduring partnership with the Commission, noting his valuable contributions both as a civil society leader in the past and now as a government official. He called for the continuation of the existing collaboration between the Commission and the Kano State Government to sustain the state’s positive record in human rights advocacy.

Responding, the Commissioner expressed deep appreciation to the NHRC delegation for the visit, describing it as a reflection of mutual respect and shared commitment to justice and accountability.

“Although I currently serve in government, I still see myself as an ambassador of the civil society sector within the political space I now occupy. I will continue to represent that constituency with pride and dedication,” he said.

He reaffirmed that the Kano State Government remains deeply committed to upholding human rights and ensuring that no act capable of undermining human dignity is tolerated.

The Commissioner highlighted the inclusion of the NHRC State Coordinator in various sensitive state committees as clear evidence of the government’s sincerity and openness towards human rights protection.

“Our government values human rights protection as a central pillar of governance. The continuous involvement of the NHRC in our decision-making processes demonstrates this commitment,” he added.

He finally assured the visiting delegation of continued partnership and collaboration with the NHRC and other national and international bodies dedicated to advancing human rights and social justice.

“On behalf of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, I assure you of our unwavering support and readiness to strengthen partnerships that promote the rights and welfare of our people,” he concluded.
