In a significant move demonstrating commitment to modern communication channels, the Kano State Government has pledged its strong support for online media organizations operating within the state. This assurance aims to foster effective information dissemination and enhance the media landscape.
The commitment was articulated by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, while speaking at the formal inauguration of the pioneer Executive Members of the Kano Online Media Chapel. The landmark event took place at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Farm Centre, Kano.
Commissioner Waiya highlighted the inauguration as a key step in promoting unity and professionalism among digital journalists, aligning with broader reforms initiated by his ministry. He candidly addressed past challenges, noting that “the integrity of Kano State had been at stake for a long time,” which necessitated a strategic repositioning of how information is handled and disseminated.
Underscoring the importance of collaboration, Comrade Waiya emphasized that unity among all journalists is crucial for achieving success. “Unity is one of the greatest strengths required,” he stressed.
Acknowledging the operational hurdles faced by online platforms, Commissioner Waiya made a firm commitment on behalf of the government. “I am aware of their operational challenges,” he stated, promising tangible encouragement and support to cultivate a “conducive environment” for journalists to perform their duties effectively. In return, he urged the online media practitioners to partner with the government in disseminating accurate information about its programs and activities to the public.
Echoing the Commissioner’s sentiments, the Chairman of the Inauguration Committee, veteran journalist Alhaji Ahmed Aminu, emphasized the value of bringing online media practitioners under a unified umbrella. He described this as essential for ensuring a reliable flow of information, consistent with the current administration’s policy. Alhaji Aminu praised the Ministry of Information under Comrade Waiya’s leadership for its proactive efforts in achieving this unification.
Lauding online media as integral to modern communication, Alhaji Aminu also reminded the newly inaugurated members of their core responsibilities: to convey information that is “reliable, honourable, tangible, and objective,” adhering strictly to journalistic ethics.
This pledge of support from the Kano State Government, championed by Commissioner Waiya, marks a potentially transformative moment for online media in the state, aiming to strengthen its capacity and ensure its contribution to informed public discourse.
