Amnesty International Criticizes Tinubu’s Clemency for Convicted Human Rights Offenders

Abuja, Nigeria — Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent decision to grant clemency and pardons to individuals convicted of serious human rights violations in Nigeria.
In a statement, the global rights organization said the move could deny justice and reparations to victims and their families, noting that the exercise appeared to favor perpetrators rather than uphold accountability and the rule of law.
According to Amnesty International, the government’s action risks undermining judicial processes, obstructing truth-seeking efforts, and entrenching a culture of impunity for human rights crimes.
“The manner in which these pardons were issued prioritizes offenders over victims, thereby preventing effective remedies and reparations,” the organization stated.
Amnesty International urged President Tinubu to review the decision and ensure that justice, truth, and reparation for victims remain central to Nigeria’s human rights commitments.
