Abuja, Nigeria – April 11, 2025 – In a move aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s defence capabilities, Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON, mni, has called for a significant escalation in defence industry collaboration with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. During a pivotal meeting at Ship House, Abuja, with a high-level Pakistani delegation led by General Shahir Shamsad, Minister Badaru lauded Pakistan’s proven counter-terrorism strategies, highlighting their cost-effectiveness and suitability for Nigeria’s unique security landscape.

Minister Badaru emphasized that the enduring bond between Nigeria and Pakistan, rooted in mutual respect, shared challenges, and aligned strategic objectives, provides a robust platform for expanded defence cooperation. “The established history of collaboration between our nations lays a strong groundwork for deepening our partnership in the defence sector,” he asserted. “By working together, we can not only enhance our military capabilities but also foster greater understanding and trust.”

In a clear articulation of Nigeria’s strategic vision, Minister Badaru advocated for “partnerships devoid of strings or coercion,” underscoring the importance of genuine collaboration. He specifically praised Pakistan’s success in countering terrorism and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) through the utilization of indigenous technology and affordable drone solutions.

The proposed collaboration will concentrate on critical areas such as drone technology and the advancement of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), with the aim of boosting local manufacturing prowess and innovation in military hardware.

General Shahir Shamsad, head of the Pakistani delegation, commended DICON’s progress in local military equipment production, acknowledging Nigeria’s pivotal role in Africa and its strategic importance to Pakistan. He expressed confidence that a strengthened partnership would yield mutual benefits for both nations.

This landmark visit signifies a new era in Nigeria-Pakistan defence relations, as both countries seek to leverage their respective strengths to achieve enhanced security and technological advancements.
