Abuja, Nigeria – October 14, 2024: Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has pledged his administration’s unwavering support for the planned upgrade of the Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri to international status. During a visit to the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace in Abuja, Governor Zulum met with Minister Festus Keyamo to discuss the project.
“As the chairman of the Northeast Governors’ Forum, I want to assure you of our full commitment to making this a reality,” Governor Zulum stated. He emphasized that the upgrade would significantly boost economic development in the region, particularly given Maiduguri’s strategic location as a gateway to countries around Lake Chad and Central Africa.
Minister Keyamo confirmed that the airport is set to commence operations as a fully international facility on January 1, 2025. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the upgrade, noting that the Northeast region was the only geopolitical zone in Nigeria without an international airport.
Governor Zulum was accompanied by a delegation of Borno State officials, including Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and Kaka Shehu Lawan. The visit underscored the importance of the airport upgrade to the development of Borno State and the entire Northeast region.
