Maiduguri, Nigeria – Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has approved the release of N8 billion to clear outstanding gratuities for retired primary school teachers and other civil servants. This payment covers liabilities accrued between 2019 and 2021.

During a press briefing at the Government House, Governor Zulum emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his financial obligations to retired civil servants. “Since assuming office in 2019, we have disbursed approximately 25 billion naira to settle gratuities for those who have served the state and local governments,” he stated.
The Governor further assured the public that his administration will diligently work towards settling all outstanding gratuities and pensions before the end of his tenure in 2027. “Insh’Allah, I will clear all the backlog of gratuities before I leave office,” he pledged.
This significant disbursement follows previous efforts to address the issue. In 2019, the Governor released N3 billion in two installments to clear gratuities for 1,684 retirees who left service between 2013 and 2019. In 2020, over N12 billion was disbursed for retirees from both state and local government service who left between 2013 and 2017.
