The Nigerian Senate has rejected a petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. The petition was deemed invalid due to procedural irregularities, specifically because Senator Natasha had personally signed the petition, violating Senate rules.

During the Senate session, Senator Tahir Munguno cited Order 40(4) to argue that the petition should not be entertained, as it violates Senate procedures. Despite Natasha’s attempts to defend her petition, the Senate ultimately upheld the argument.

This development comes amid a series of events, including:

  • Defamation Lawsuit: Akpabio’s wife, Ekaette Akpabio, filed a defamation lawsuit against Senator Natasha, demanding ₦350 billion in damages ².
  • Calls for Independent Investigation: A women’s rights group, Voices for Inclusion and Equity for Women (VIEW), called for an independent investigation into the allegations ².
  • Christian Association of Nigeria’s Caution: The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) cautioned against taking sides, emphasizing the need for a responsible and peaceful resolution.

The dismissal of the petition has sparked heated debate, with some arguing that the Senate is attempting to silence Senator Natasha.
