KANO – April 30, 2025 – In a proactive move to galvanize community support for state-building, the Kano State Government has urged Friday Mosque Imams across the state to utilize their pulpits to foster patriotism, unity, and love for Kano, thereby contributing to sustainable development.

This significant call to action was delivered by the State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during the concluding ceremony of an insightful two-day sensitization workshop organized specifically for the Imams. The workshop, a testament to Commissioner Waiya’s strategic vision for inclusive governance, was a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, the Ministry for Religious Affairs, and the Kano State Council of Friday Mosques Chief Imams.

Addressing the religious leaders, Commissioner Waiya underscored the importance of instilling a profound sense of civic pride and responsibility. He articulated that such values are crucial for citizens to actively uphold the state’s dignity and refrain from actions that could negatively impact Kano’s image on both national and international stages. His initiative aims to bridge communication gaps and align community messaging with governmental goals.
Commissioner Waiya provided an extensive overview of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s leadership, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to citizen-centric policies aimed squarely at enhancing public welfare. He passionately appealed to the Imams to act as vital conduits, educating their followers about these beneficial policies and promoting positive conduct that resonates with Kano’s ambitious developmental objectives.
Recognizing the immense respect commanded by the clergy in Nigeria, the Commissioner wisely cautioned against any statements or actions that could potentially tarnish their esteemed reputation or that of Kano State. He urged the Imams to safeguard their influential position by maintaining exemplary standards in their sermons and public discourse.
Highlighting the administration’s accomplishments, Waiya pointed to numerous ongoing development projects focused on ensuring good governance, prudent resource management, and the protection of public assets. He specifically lauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s unwavering support for Islam, demonstrated through initiatives like the construction and renovation of mosques throughout the state. Furthermore, he reassured the Imams of the government’s dedication to enhancing their welfare, enabling them to perform their duties with dignity.
In his closing remarks, Commissioner Waiya encouraged the Imams to actively familiarize themselves with government programs and policies. This, he noted, would empower them to accurately inform the public and offer constructive feedback, ensuring initiatives effectively serve both Islam and the people of Kano.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Sheikh Ibrahim Habib Gezawa, the Secretary of the Kano State Council of Friday Mosque Imams, expressed deep appreciation for the workshop orchestrated by Commissioner Waiya’s Ministry. He hailed the initiative as timely and essential, predicting it would significantly improve the Imams’ capacity for effective public communication and alignment with the state’s development vision.
The impactful workshop featured key presentations including: “The Policies of the Kano State Government for Improving Citizens’ Lives and Sustaining Development” by Commissioner Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya; “The Structure and Implementation of the Annual Budget” by Kano State Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Sulaiman Shanono; and “Strategies for Effective Communication by Scholars to Promote Peace and Community Development” by Dr. Bala Muhammad of Bayero University, Kano.
The event concluded with the formal presentation of participation certificates, acknowledging the Imams’ commitment to this vital collaborative effort for Kano’s progress.
