Nigeria Focuses on Homegrown Innovation for Defence, Emphasizing Research and Technology.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to advancing Nigeria’s military strength through innovation and self-reliance. Speaking at the Defence Research and Development Bureau’s (DRDB) Annual Seminar in Abuja, Badaru stressed the need for heightened collaboration to boost local production and research in the defence sector.

In his address, the Minister highlighted the pivotal role of Research and Development (R&D) in Nigeria’s national security strategy. He emphasized that a self-reliant Military Industrial Complex, supported by local innovation, is critical to countering the evolving global and regional security challenges.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is anchored on strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities, and the DICON Bill of 2023 is a testament to our commitment in this area,” Badaru noted, while underscoring the need for continued R&D to foster indigenous defence production.

The seminar, themed “Enhancing Synergy in R&D Towards a Robust Military Industrial Complex in Nigeria”, focused on promoting collaboration among defence stakeholders. Badaru emphasized, “Synergy is crucial in harnessing cutting-edge technology and staying ahead of emerging threats. Through cooperation, we can establish a resilient, self-reliant defence posture.

“The Minister also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to encouraging private sector involvement and capacity building in defence research, marking this as key to achieving long-term security and industrial growth in Nigeria’s defence sector.
