OPEN LETTER: Dokpesi Urges Senate President Akpabio to Seek Reconciliation Amidst Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Allegations

By Usman A Harande

Abuja, Nigeria – April 6, 2025 – In an open letter addressed to Senate President Godswil Akpabio, Dr. Timothy Dokpesi Adidi has called for statesmanship and reconciliation amidst the escalating tensions stemming from allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Published via social media, the letter urges Akpabio, the third-highest-ranking official in Nigeria, to reflect on his leadership and seek a resolution to the ongoing controversy.

Dokpesi acknowledges the complexity of the situation, noting the difficulty in discerning the truth amidst conflicting accounts. He also points out the current absence of concrete evidence regarding the sexual harassment allegations, emphasizing that while evidence is critical, its lack doesn’t invalidate a survivor’s experience.

“The core of my concern transcends the specific allegations,” Dokpesi writes, “It is about the overall trajectory of your leadership and the need for a statesmanlike approach in navigating this crisis.”

Key Points Highlighted:

  • Call for Statesmanship: Dokpesi urges Akpabio to act with maturity and wisdom.
  • Emphasis on Reconciliation: The letter advocates for dialogue and resolution over further conflict.
  • National Interest: Dokpesi stresses the importance of preserving the Senate’s dignity.
  • Reflection and Introspection: Akpabio is encouraged to critically assess his leadership.

Dokpesi advises Akpabio to avoid listening to potentially self-serving counsel and instead, to consider the long-term implications of the situation on his reputation and career. He emphasizes that seeking reconciliation is not a sign of weakness but an act of virtue.

“Your Excellency,” Dokpesi states, “This situation can be diffused. Employ your office to convene stakeholders and political mentors. Let everyone sheath their swords for the sake of Kogi Central and the nation.”

He concludes by expressing hope that Akpabio will embrace a path of humility and reconciliation, thereby etching a positive legacy in Nigerian history.

“A move of strategic reconciliation should be implored,” Dokpesi asserts. “Kindly use your office to douse the tension therein by calling on stakeholders and political mentors to step into this matter. Let everyone sheath their sword for the sake of the good people of Kogi Central and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Attempting to do so will not make you a coward. It will only make you virtuous and put your name in the footnote of history to have done a noble act of humility. If a move of such is made and taking advantage of the collective good of the people, this will be history.”
