In a bid to promote inclusivity and self-sufficiency, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has organized a training program for 560 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Jigawa State, focusing on poultry farming.

The initiative, tagged “Innovative Youth (I-Youth),” is a collaborative effort between IITA and the MasterCard Foundation. According to IITA’s Training Officer, Mr. Badamasi Muktar, the program aims to empower PWDs, who are often marginalized and vulnerable, by providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to establish their own poultry businesses.

The three-week training program, which commenced on February 24, covers topics such as poultry rearing, business management, and marketing. The beneficiaries will also receive guidance on how to access markets and customers for their products.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Sulaiman Muhammad, Chairman of the Joined Network of Persons With Disabilities (JNPWD) in Dutse, expressed gratitude to the organizers, stating that the training has been informative and empowering.

The JNPWD Chairman in the state, Adamu Shuaibu, praised the initiative, noting that it will have a positive impact on the lives of the participants and the agricultural sector in the state. He appealed to other state governments and corporate organizations to emulate the gesture, highlighting its potential to reduce street begging among persons with disabilities.
